Why should you read this book?

Do you ever wonder if other nations support their public schools better than the United States? Do you think that America’s public schools are the only ones with academic achievement gaps among students? What are the strengths of our school system? Do we have a national plan to improve public schools as other nations do?

Spoiler alert! Eleven other nations support their public schools better than the United States. Other nations have academic achievement gaps among groups of students too. We have multiple unheralded strengths. No, we do not have a national plan.

Be prepared to be surprised. Some states are performing high on international tests. American schools have very unique expenditures. American public schools are not as well financed as they were in the past. American public school teachers are not the problem, since the evidence shows they are overall as good as teachers in other countries.

This book compares public schools in the United States with those in multiple countries, especially Canada, Finland, Japan, and South Korea. Few comparisons exist contrasting just public school systems. We can learn lessons from other countries.

You should read this book if you are an educator, parent, journalist, political leader, school board member, or advocate for public schools. The information is critical for a broad understanding of America’s public schools in contrast with other nations along with recommendations for our public schools from the lessons learned through the comparisons.
